Day 6 Lluc, Coll dels Reis & Sa Calobra
Another big day that raised the bar once more! I thought our previous days were tough climbing, but today was over the top! It’s getting late and I’m planning an early morning, so I’ll keep everything brief for now.
We had three distinct climbs today: Lluc (which we did on Tuesday) + Coll dels Reis (the inland side) + Coll dels Reis (the sea side up from Sa Calobra). I made today’s video shorter and faster, along with added some text to try and describe the ride in chronological order; a picture of the elevation is at the end.
First, we had an hour ride out to the start of Lluc. We didn’t go fast, but rather a nice warm up.
The Lluc is categorized as a ‘Cat 3’ (out of 5) climb covering 7.9 kilometers at an average of 5% grade. After reaching Lluc, there are some dramatic descents down a bit before beginning the inland climb to Coll dels Reis. Coll dels Reis is a ‘Cat 2’ climb covering 2.5 kilometers with an average grade of 6%, and sits at 682m / 2240 ft.
Once at the top, you get even more dramatic views of the ocean and the winding road down to the town of Sa Calobra. The road is really impressive, switching its way through the jagged mountains like a snake down to the water. The way down features a few neat rock formations, including a vertical narrow passage. At the bottom is a quant town with a few restaurants and a cove of blue, blue water.
The way up (info link) is a ‘Cat 1’ climb, covering 10.1 kilometers gaining 682m / 2240 ft with an average grade of 7%.
We ended the day with 70 miles and ~6,500 feet of climbing. I’ll do an updated post tomorrow with more details!
