Day 7 Platja des Coll Baix & Port de Pollença
With a big day yesterday (Thursday), Friday was a planned recovery day. On Day 5, I did some scouting for an easterly facing coastline to try and catch a sunrise. Today was the day I put that plan into motion. This required a bit of coordination & packing to ensure I had bike gear, run gear, swim gear, camera gear and food, along with stuff to navigate in the dark; but we made it work.
After a 20 minute starlit ride out to the southern peninsula, I came to the end of the paved road and the beginning of a trailhead for the national park system. I hid my bike up the hill, behind some bushes and covered it with brush and then started my slow run to the coast. Lit by my headlamp, the trail weaved for 2 miles until reaching the decent down to the beach. I didn’t realize how rustic the half mile decent would be and in some spots became quite ‘sketchy’. But, after some cautious moves and ‘WTFs’, I made it to the water and walked onto the stoney beach. A few seagulls and I took in the sunrise and enjoyed the crashing waves as they beat against the large rocks.
The way up and out was smooth after I knew where to go, except for the stare down I had with the goat standing on the trail marker. My patience won, or the grass up the mountain seemed more interesting, and we said our maaa-byes.
The second half of the day was spent on the beach of the northern peninsula city of Port de Pollenca. Just off the beach is a marina, which is always a pleasure to watch the boats come in and out of the harbor. I also did a little swimming with the GoPro; it’s awesome to capture some fish swimming around with that great video quality!
Overall, it was a great recovery day and I’m ready for the final ride tomorrow!
